While Kilimanjaro is technically climbable every month of the year, timing your trek can make a big difference in weather, crowd levels, and overall experience.
JANUARY – MARCH (Long Rains Approaching)
Excellent time to climb. Weather is warm, visibility is great, and trails are less crowded than the peak season. Some rain in the afternoons is possible.
APRIL – MAY (Long Rains / 'Masika')
The wettest months. Heavy rain, muddy trails, and poor visibility. Most operators reduce schedules during this period. Not recommended for first-timers.
JUNE – OCTOBER (Dry Season / Peak Season)
Prime climbing season. Dry, clear weather with stunning views. This is when most climbers attempt the mountain, so trails and campsites are busier.
NOVEMBER – DECEMBER (Short Rains / 'Vuli')
A shoulder season with mixed weather. Short rain showers, usually in the afternoon. Fewer crowds and often good climbing conditions.
OUR RECOMMENDATION
For the best balance of good weather and smaller crowds, we recommend January-February or late September-October. The Machame and Lemosho routes are particularly beautiful during these windows.
Book early for June-August — these months fill up fast!
