5 Tips for a Successful Summit Night

calendar_today August 31, 2026
Summit night on Kilimanjaro is an experience you'll never forget. You'll set off around midnight, headlamp cutting through the darkness, with the summit ridge as your only guide. It's cold, it's steep, and it's mentally demanding — but the sunrise from the top makes every step worth it.

Here are five tips from our lead guide Joseph Mboya, who has summited over 500 times:

1. Pace yourself relentlessly. The number one reason people don't summit isn't fitness — it's going too fast. Walk slowly, breathe deeply, and let your body acclimatise.

2. Layer up properly. Temperatures at the summit can drop to -20°C. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add fleece, and top with a down jacket and wind shell.

3. Eat and drink even if you don't want to. Altitude suppresses appetite, but your body needs fuel. Sip water constantly and nibble on energy bars.

4. Trust your guide. Our guides know every turn of every route. If they say slow down, slow down. If they say you can do it, you can.

5. Focus on the sunrise, not the summit. The goal isn't just Uhuru Peak — it's watching the sun rise over the African plains from 5,895 metres. Keep that image in your mind.
