From Rainforest to Alpine Desert: The 5 Climate Zones of Kili

calendar_today August 31, 2026
One of the most remarkable things about Kilimanjaro is how quickly the landscape changes as you climb. In just five to seven days, you'll pass through five distinct climate zones — each with its own plants, animals, and atmosphere.

1. Cultivated Zone (800–1,800 m)
The lower slopes are home to farms and villages. Banana plants, coffee bushes, and maize fields stretch across the hillside.

2. Rainforest Zone (1,800–2,800 m)
Dense, lush rainforest wraps around the mountain. Look out for colobus monkeys, blue duikers, and a dazzling array of orchids and ferns.

3. Heather and Moorland Zone (2,800–4,000 m)
As you climb higher, the forest gives way to giant heather and lobelia plants. The air becomes drier and the views open up dramatically.

4. Alpine Desert Zone (4,000–5,000 m)
Harsh and beautiful, this zone sees very little rainfall. Temperatures swing wildly between day and night. You'll feel truly remote here.

5. Arctic Summit Zone (5,000–5,895 m)
At the top, ice fields and glacial moraines surround you. The air is thin, the wind is fierce, and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Each zone offers something unique, and our guides will point out the highlights along the way.
